Mayor Adams’ Plan To Boost NYC’s Economic Future With AI

Mayor Adams is taking major steps to transform NYC into a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI). Last week, he and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) released a report detailing their plan to integrate AI into the city’s economy. This initiative will create thousands of new business and job opportunities in the region.

NYC AI Nexus: $3 Million Investment to Advance AI Adoption

At the core of this initiative is NYCEDC, which will invest $3 million into the NYC AI Nexus. The organization aims to:

  • Offer financial support for NYC-based AI startups and businesses
  • Promote NYC as a leader in AI development
  • Encourage AI adoption across every major industry in the city
  • Create and launch an AI Advisory Council
  • Develop AI literacy programs in the city’s public libraries
  • Offer internship opportunities at AI-first startups for The City University of New York (CUNY) students.
  • Support AI training programs that prepare New Yorkers for AI-related job opportunities.

OpenAI Expands to NYC and Partners with Local AI Initiatives

To further help develop NYC’s AI growth, OpenAI has opened its first East Coast office in Manhattan and is partnering with the city to support AI development initiatives. The firm plans to:

  • Offer in $500,000 Application Programming Interface (API) credits to those participating in NYCEDC programs, including the NYC AI Nexus and the Founder Fellowship
  • Provide 500 free ChatGPT Plus accounts to those participating in AI literacy programs organized by the Fund for the City Of New York, Decoded Futures, and other NYCEDC literacy programs.

The firm also plans to join the city’s new AI Advisory Council and help local businesses make the most of new AI tech. Being a leader in the AI industry, Open AI will be crucial to NYC’s transition into a hub for AI development.

How AI Development Will Impact The City’s Economy

AI has impacted every industry in just a few short years — and this is only the beginning. The city government understands this and plans on making the most out of this transformation. While NYC has record-high job numbers and lower unemployment rates, AI development will only continue to create opportunities for New Yorkers over the next few years.

“Mayor Eric Adams’ and NYCEDC’s initiative to continue this leadership in our fast-changing landscape in the age of AI is a game changer for our economy and our workforce,” said New York State Assemblymember Clyde Vanel. “By investing in AI innovation, we can make sure that all New Yorkers have access to the opportunities this technology brings.”

AI Is A Crucial Part Of NYC’s Future

Mayor Adams’ and NYCEDC’s initiative will completely transform the city’s economy and offer plenty of new opportunities to New Yorkers in all five boroughs. As AI impacts industries worldwide, New York City is leading the way and becoming the place where it all happens.

“The jobs of tomorrow are being created today in New York City, and artificial intelligence is key to making that happen,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “As we hit another record high for jobs in our city, our administration is looking to the future — and the future shows AI as the next emerging sector and source of job creation across our city, the country, and the globe.”
